Aamir Khan was born on the 14th of March in the year 1965 and is an Indian actor who is also a director and a producer. His birth name is Aamir Hussain Khan and was born into a family that was involved in the Hindi film industry- his father Tahir Hussain was a film producer and his uncle Nasir Hussain was a producer, director and an actor. With several successful films that have met with both commercial and critical success, Aamir Khan is one of the leading actors in the Hindi film industry today and also one of the most critically acclaimed ones.

Aamir started his career in films as an adolescent actor for Nasir Hussain’s (uncle) movie Yaadon Ki Baaraat (in the year 1973). It was much later; almost 11 long years that he began his career with Holi (in the year 1984) and it was with the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (in the year 1988) that Aamir tasted his 1st ever commercial success. In the year 1989, Aamir received the first ever National Film Award (that’s a Special Jury honor), thanks to the character he played in the movie Raakh. It was the film Raha Hindustani in the year 1996 that Aamir won the best actor award (Filmfare Award) which was followed by his second award (an Academy Award-nomination) for the best actor which he owed to the film Lagaan.

An extended 4 year break followed where Aamir did not take up any acting assignments, and it was Mangal Pandey: The Rising (in the year 2005), a historical role which became Aamir khan’s comeback! He won another Best Actor award (Filmfare Critics) for his skills in the film Rang De Basanti (in the year 2006). It was the year after this that Aamir made his debut in as a director with the movie Taare Zameen Par, which went on to win him the Best Director (Filmfare Award).

In the year 2008, Aamir showcased his expectional acting skills in Ghajini which turned out to be the maximum grossing motion picture for that year, followed by the film 3 Idiots (in the year 2009) that turned out to be the utmost grossing Bollywood big screen of all times. Dedicated for his offering towards the area of arts, Aamir was honored by The Government of India with the prestigious Padma Shri in the year 2003 in addition to the esteemed Padma Bhushan in the year 2010.

The Career Path….
Aamir Khan debuted as a child actor, in 1973, in Nasir Hussain’s film Yaadon Ki Baarat. His first performance as an adult actor was for the 1984 film Holi, but Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak is considered to be his first commercial success. The film effectively launched Khan’s career as an actor, thanks to his much-publicized “chocolate boy” looks. It was in the same year that he received his first National Film Award for his performance in the film Raakh. This success was followed by successful films that released in the late eighties and early nineties that include Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Rangeela.

Aamir Khan, quite unusually, acts in one or two films in a year.  The1996 film Raja Hindustani released and turned out to be a blockbuster. In the following years, Khan’s films didn’t fare particularly well and it was only with the 1997 film Ishq that he once again began to see success in the movie market. The 1998 film Ghulam saw him turn into a playback singer with the song, “Aye, kya bolti tu?” Sarfarosh and Earth were quite successful. His 2000 release, Mela, was a flop.
In 2001, Aamir Khan acted in Lagaan, the maiden production of the Aamir khan Productions. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Award in 74th Academy Awards. He won his second Filmfare for this film. The year also saw the release of the extremely successful film Dil Chahta Hai. He then took a four-year-long hiatus and came back with  Mangal Pandey: The Rising and Rang De Basanti . A year later, he made his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par And in 2008, he followed up with Ghajini and with 3 Idiots in 2009, both of which were hits. His next film is Delhi Belly, which will release in 2011.

Honors and Nominations
Before Khan won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the 1996 film Raja Hindustani, he had been nominated seven times for films like Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Raakh and Dil. For Raakh, he was awarded the special jury award in the National Film Awards. His second Filmfare Award for Best Actor was awarded for the film Lagaan in 2001, and receiver the Fimfare Critics’ Award for Rang De Basanti. In 2008, he won the Filmfare Best Director.
